In the beginning...
This is it, I have finally taken the plunge and embarked upon my first car restoration project.
After many years of research into makes, models, styles and eras and much consideration on the type of vehicle I would like, how much money I can afford to spend (I'm sure it won't be a waste?) , and the practicality of such a task; I chose my car.
Say hello to the Peugeot 304 convertible!
Aesthetically I think the cabriolet in particular has some style and individuality (being French why wouldn't it) , and was produced in large enough numbers to support a knowledgeable owner community and parts trade, while being exclusive enough that I personally cannot recall ever seeing one on the road before.
On a practical note, spares are mostly available, they were factory treated against rust (to some degree), they have a practical boot for touring, and an engine that, while precluding the monika of 'sports car', does enable them to keep up with modern traffic jams.
Having finally decided on the car I wanted, all I needed to do was get hold of one...
eBay obliged, and after seeing a couple of 304's come and go over a few weeks, I saw one that looked like a good bet at a fair price. I will say that to buy a car based only on a couple of photos without even 'kicking the tires' is not the recommended technique, but for the price, I was prepared to accept the risk of buying nothing but a car shaped lump of iron oxide, and to expect no problems with a 34 year old French car would be absurd.
For the princely sum of £430 shiny pounds, I became the proud owner of my first classic car, and on 02/10/2006 I bought and collected my new pride and joy.
The poor quality picture below was taken at around 22:00 on 02/10/06, just after delivery and installation into my cramped garage.
I intend for this blog to be a record of the restoration over the coming weeks and months. Please feel free to post any comments, all advice is welcome, and any questions will receive an attempt at an answer.
This coming weekend, work will commence...
